CPU Not Detected

I recently got this motherboard from a friend:

• MSI X370 Gaming Plus

I am pairing it up with a newly bought CPU and after market cooler:

• Ryzen 9 3900x
• Noctua NH-U12A

Every time I press the power button, the Noctua fans and the case fans all turn on and spin. My graphics card (GTX 970) also turns on.

 

The problem is that my MSI X370 Gaming Plus motherboard's EZ Debug LED keeps telling me that my CPU is not detected or failed.

 

I have tried:

• Replugging everything several times
• Trying a different CPU power cable to the motherboard
• Reapplying thermal paste to the CPU and remounting the heatsink/fan

Am I missing something obvious? Is there a compatibility issue or something? My research shows that the two of them should work.

Is the bios updated on the motherboard? Out of the box bios only supports 1st gen Ryzen, to use later generations you need to first update the bios using a 1st gen cpu.

Sounds like the BIOS isn’t updated to the Zen2 compatible one.

I do not have any gen1 CPUs. Is there any other way to update the BIOs?

It doesn't have a usb bios update feature, so your options are to take it to a computer shop for a bios update or loan a gen 1 cpu from someone.

Doesn't have a bios flash back button. 

Ask a computer store/ the vendor to update it for you.
