Apple Maps is not really their competitors. OSM, Mapbox or Here pose as bigger competitors than Apple Maps currently is. I honestly don't understand what's Apple's vision, except for offering a bare bones mapping in their ecosystem. Except for DDG deal, it seems they aren't fully invested on it, after all these years. The state TomTom currently is, Apple's main map data provider, probably doesn't help either.
