Odd way to bypass login on Mint?

I've noticed something peculiar on my Mint 19.1 setup. I have my laptop connected to an external monitor; the laptop display is off when the external monitor is on. When I turn the external monitor off, it goes back to the laptop display. Once the screen saver comes on, I need to re-enter my password to access the desktop. So far, so normal.

Where things get weird is that if I'm at the login screen on my laptop and then turn the external monitor back on, I am no longer asked to re-enter my password and it takes me right to the desktop.

Anyone else experienced this? Has it been addressed in later versions?

Sounds like you are experiencing this bug:

Does not appear to be fixed, the GitHub issue is from 2016 and the bug label was added this June. Seems to be a bug in Cinnamon.

At least it's a known error. Weird thing is, I'm one of those weirdos who's running MATE.

Just change your display manager to something else and that will fix the issue  if the issue is in the login screen that is. Hopefully Linux Mint 20 comes with a fix.
