Hey all,

So just recently I have had unstable issues happening with my gaming computer, which each part is nearly 2 years old. Once graphics are rendered in any AAA game, the computer will unexpectedly shutdown and reboot. For a while I've had the CPU oc'ed to 5Ghz for around 1 1/2 years, and started noticing instabilities, and eventually set the values to default a couple months ago, but I am seeing crashes all the time now on default values. Only when I underclock the CPU to 3.0 Ghz, from 3.6Ghz, the system is stable to run and run 1 hour of Prime95. Here are the specs:

  • SSD Wiped with fresh install of Windows 10 LTSC
  • NVIDIA GTX 980
  • Intel Core i5 8600K
  • 12G DDR4 RAM
  • MSI Z370M Mortar Motherboard

When looking through Event Viewer in System and Application, there is only NetBT EventID 4311 error once the computer boots again. Other than that, no other alarming events occurring. The only reported events from the shutdown is a

Kernal-Power EventID 41: "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

and

Kernal-General EventID 20: "The previous system shutdown at "TIME" on ‎"DATE" was unexpected."

And no event occurs at or before the crash.

I was hoping if the reason of the crashing is because of the CPU or not. My thoughts are is that the CPU was running oc'ed for too long now it's about to break.

Thanks and peace.

@toemass What PSU and temps?

I will recommend an NHu12s (or an NHd15 (maybe)) for your PC build. Quote or @ me @Prodigy_Smit for me to see your replies.

Indeed, check your temps. Which cooler do you have?

Also very possible that the PSU is toast as it can no longer provide enough current for all parts to run at full power.

Can you stress it for a bit longer cause the gpu temps seem kinda high.

You might want to repaste he GPU and make sure your geting enough airflow on to it.

I'll do that when I can, but I want to track down the other issue first

I kind of do hope it is, because that is easier to replace than a CPU lol.

Easiest way to find out if is the psu is to limit the GPU to 80% or 85% powerlimit in afterburner and do the same thing you do when it normally crashes if it doesn't its either the GPU temps or the PSU.

Update, I remembered I had a spare PSU, Cooler Master 700w, plugged it in and tested all the things that would make my pc crash and running fine, and was even was able to oc to 4.8Ghz stably. Thanks heaps for all your help.

Is 700w too much though? Can I get away with 450w?

Having some extra wattage is never a bad thing, especially when overclocking. A 700w just means it doesn't have to work as hard to provide whatever your system wants to pull. a 450w might run your system, but it would be close. Better to have a couple hundred watts of headroom than be maxing out the PSU for hours on end when gaming.

So switching your PSU helped? The same thing has been happening to me, playing a game or watching a movie and it just turns off out of no where. But my pc lights and fans stay on

Everything switched off for me and 1 second later rebooted. Try seeing if there's any errors you can diffuse in event viewer.

Cool thanks for the info.
