Framerates and Input Lag

Hello Techtippers,

 

As I prepare to build my next PC, I'm looking to minimize input lag. I'm focusing on 1080p gaming at Medium-High settings, so I'll be using a Freesync-compatible 1080p 144 Hz monitor with a 1ms response time (TN or VA, not sure which yet), and a Radeon RX 5600 XT graphics card.

 

My questions to you fine people are as follows: What's the best way to reduce input lag in that setup? Setting a framerate cap in the FreeSync range? Enable FreeSync, but no cap? Vice versa? Something else entirely? Thanks in advance!

You arent going to notice much as long as you are above 140 fps+. The things youll notice are Frame dips and latency and thats all game dependant and adjusting settings.

Higher fps = more frequent update of information, so fps cap isn't a good idea

 

Might be placebo but I tried running my rhythm game at 60,120,240 and unlimited (around 2000)

There are significant differences in how I performed, even on my 60hz panel (measured by avg deviation between my click timing following the rhythm that is measured by the game)

I guess that's what I'm after, too. How to minimize the frequency and severity of frame dips. So you would say playing on lower settings is the way to go, since I have little control over how well-made a game is (though I shouldn't have to worry with competitive games like Overwatch and CS:GO)?
