ASRock BIOS Update problem

I want to update the BIOS on my B450M Pro4 (currently on 3.60, want to update to 4.30) because I've heard that the new AGESA patches have better performance.

 

The problem is that on their website they say "ASRock do NOT recommend updating this BIOS if Pinnacle, Raven or Summit Ridge CPU is being used on your system." and I have a Pinnacle Ridge CPU (1600AF).

Will I be fine updating the BIOS, even though they say they don't recommend it? And also, should I update one version at a time or can I go straight to 4.30?

you shhould contact ASRock customer service. they can advise you on what to do and if you can go straight to the latest or you need to do each one manually. 

if that update is not recommended, don't do it. That latest bios might break support for your 1600AF and you won't be able to boot.

I guess there's nothing new for the old CPUs in the newer BIOSes anyway, just more risk of AMD having botched something for them.

Well, thanks for the replies. I'm not gonna risk bricking my system (especially right now because I'm saving money for something else) for like maybe 5% improvement at best.

It probably won't brick. If it was a Gigabyte board, you'd want to follow the instructions carefully. 

 

Anyhow, there's not enough space on the bios to support 4 generations of processors. So when updating for 3000 series compatibility, the support for some chips may be dropped and will not post with the board. Like a Ryzen 3 1200 for example may no longer be supported if you update the bios.

 

Now most common processors will remain supported like a 2600 and 2700, less common won't.

I was just going to point that out as well.

The BIOS chip on the B450M Pro4 is only 128 Mb (= 16 MB) in size.

I think the "Not recommended" is if you are using an older Ryzen APU / CPU, you *MIGHT* lose support once updating to a newer BIOS.

Because of the 16 MB (vs 32 MB) BIOS chip, adding support for 3000-series and 4000-series APUs / CPUs means support for older Ryzen CPUs will need to be dropped.

 

Again, probably best to double check with AsRock customer support to be 110% sure.
