They're both fantastic cards. It kind of depends on which features you like better. If you have a G-Sync monitor, then you probably want to go with Team Green, but if you like FreeSync, then consider AMD. Here's a quick breakdown:

  • Nvidia has better VR optimizations for VR games, PhysX, Ansel, better positional audio, increased DX11 performance, ShadowPlay, and G-Sync. Their newer cards also have Tensor cores for much better performance in AI and machine learning tasks, if you work with TensorFlow or Keras or anything like that.
  • AMD has better open-source support (Linux gaming is a lot better with AMD) as well as open drivers, an easier driver experience (AMD has unified drivers), but they're not doing that great right now (at least until Big Navi comes out).

If you're a big Linux user, then the AMD cards are going to appeal to you more. If you game more and you care about Nvidia features like ShadowPlay, Ansel, or PhysX, then go for Nvidia.

"Not breaking it or making it worse is key."

"Bad choices make good stories."

New better cards will be released in the near future, for Nvidia, heard sept. 9 from Steve the other day, they talked about nvidia teasing something for august 21st, so if you aren't in a rush you should get a good deal more performance for your money.
Amd gpus are likely to follow shortly after, or possibly even be shoehorned in before nvidia's
