If your looking for more FPS in games, video cars first. You can easily step up to something like a rtx 2070 if that’s within your budget.

Depending on resolution of your monitor, your CPU will start being a limiting factor after that point. If you can find a used 8700, that would be a solid upgrade path if the price is right. No real reason in getting a K as you can’t overclock with that mobo anyways. Gaining 6 threads will help as games are starting to be more multithread. But with that said, even with your i5, a better GPU would help very noticeably.

you could get a z series board and overclock your cpu, which can give you a nice performance bump or sell the 8600k and get an 8700 which should be a nice upgrade.  or you could sell the board and chip and move to a different platform if you want, like zen 2.

and you can wait for zen 3 and check what it has to offer and decide if you want to switch to a different platform.

but over all, budget?

I still say 2070, and a 8700 if OP can find it cheap. It’s a lot cheaper to find a used CPU that is socket compatible then changing platforms. Also, an 8700 is a fantastic gaming chip.... so it would make a good amount of sense if OP can find one for a good price.

Or a used 1080 is equally good. Still say stick with the mobo and look for 8700. Faster ram would help, but at what point are we just saying “meh build a new PC”. 8700 and a 1080 would be a drastic improvement. 1080 alone would be 90% as good as both it and a 8700, at least for now. In a few years the 8600 will start to show its age, the 8700 will hold up better.

Sure. But an 8700 will game as well as any Ryzen chip (current Ryzen, who knows what Ryzen 4000 will bring), and would be a pretty cheap upgrade path. I’d say go 8700, used 1080 or 2070, and save the remaining money, wait on it for a couple years, and upgrade mobo, CPU, and RAM in 1.5-2 years. 8600k or a 8700 are still top like gaming CPU’s.

intel 10900k str 1080p

OP, take a look at gamers nexus’s 10900k review (pulled this chart from that review) to try and see how CPU’s stack up. Your 8600 is basically compatible to a 9600, and an 8700 is basically a 9700 in gaming performance. If you can find a good deal on an 8700.... your golden.

45 amps seems ballpark... that’s 540 watts alone. If it’s really doing 45 amps on the 12v, it’s plenty of power. Now, is it actually a good unit, and will it actually provide that, with low ripple? Who knows. I didn’t do research into it specifically. But 45 amps is way more than enough, one number obviously doesn’t tell the full story tho.

At this point youre all asking him to replace his entire computer. New GPU, and get a better PSU later down the line when theyre more available. (refer to the PSU Tier list )

The i5-8600k is fine.

If you do have the money to replace the whole thing, go ahead.

I reccomend a 1660 Super (if new) or 2070, and a 1080 if you decide to go used.

Good luck.
