how do you know if gsync is on?

i have a philips 242m8 144hz and it has freesync but i have an nvidia gpu so i dont know if its working or not

yes but only if you play the game in FullScreen mode, it wont be enabled if you play in Windowed/Borderless mode

Also have in mind that G-Sync/Free-Sync only works if you have FPS lower than the max refresh rate of your display so on 144Hz display you want to have 143FPS max for example. If the FPS goes above the refresh rate then G-Sync can't function.
