SETI@home GPU not working

I want to do some work on SETI@home (Boinc) but it only works on my CPU, how to force it onto GPU? What I've tried already:

  • setting "Use GPU while computer is in use" in Computing preferences
  • in project homepage "Suspend GPU work while computer is in use?" is unchecked

I'm still very new to Boinc so any help is appreciated  :)

Not entirely sure - most of the time it worked for me ok. Hopefully one of the more BOINC knowledge folks can chime in.

Are you using a project manager?

If so, you might need to enable the GPU (or disable the GPU block, depending

on the manager) as well. Yeah, I know, BOINC can be confusing like that.

It also happens sometimes that a project just doesn't have any work units

available at the moment (or having server trouble), so it might just be that.

You can check out Seti's server status on this site.

(I'm not very familiar with Seti, and this is a bit different for each project,

so I can't make much of it myself)

It could also be that the config changes haven't propagated from the project

server to your PC. To do that manually, go to the "Projects" tab in your BOINC

mnanager, select the project, and then click the "Update" button to the left.

You need to be using the BOINC manager in advanced viewing mode for that I think.

If all still fails, have a look at your log, it might be that there's actually

something wrong (is your GPU actually supported?).

What projects always have GPU work? Which ones have you joined? I tried I think everything I can but it still doesn't use my GPU :( I even disabled CPU working, but it still uses it. I'm very new to this so I have no experience.

From http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_status.html I understood pretty much nothing... (Yeah.... I'm a total noob :D )

Edit: My GPU is supported.

What projects always have GPU work?

Not sure if there are any. GPUGrid might, but that's a Cuda project.

If you want an AMD-GPU compatible project (going by your signature),

you could try out Einstein@Home. I also partiticipate in that, so it

would be a bit easier for me to help you troubleshoot.

You can have a look at my stats page here.

Question: Are you using an account manager (like the boincstats BAM!,

for example)?

I just have the default app installed from: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

Should I get an account manager?

Should I get an account manager?

I have found it to be pretty convenient and would recommend it, yes.

Personally, I'm using boincstats BAM! and although the website is a bit

confusing at times (don't worry, that seems to be common for BOINC sites

in general :D ), I have found it to be useful.

An account manager is essentially a website which acts as an admin

tool for your projects and your hosts. You can set your local boinc

manager to use it, thus avoiding the need to configure individual

BOINC clients and different projects all individually (well, some config

is still required, but it does save a lot of work).

I recommend you have a look at the site I linked, read through it to

get an idea of what it does and how it works. The primary advantage for

me is that you can manage your projects and hosts from one central

location, and you get a convenient place for your stats.

The basic process  is this: You create a BAM! account, then join the

projects you wish to join. For projects where you have already made

an account, you can tell BAM! to search for that account and link it

to your BAM! account, for projects where you do not yet have an

account, you can tell BAM! to create one for you (it will use the same

username or email and password as for your BAM! account).

When you have joined a project, you will probably need to attach some

host to it, otherwise no work will get done.

Also, BAM! has the possibility to set computing preferences, make sure

those are set so that work can be done (yes, this can be a bit confusing

at times: You can set computing preferences locally in your BOINC

manager, on BAM! and on the project site itself).

If you wish to join a team, you will need to do that on each project's

site after joining the project (and while you're at it, make sure the

computing preferences and project preferences are OK), and also

in your BAM! account (again, a bit confusing and annoying, but such

is the price we pay in the land of BOINC for the freedom we enjoy ;)).

Lastly, you need to tell your boincmanager to use BAM!. You can set

that option in the "Tools" menu if I remember right (haven't done it

in a while, but it should be obvious). How-To is on their website.

I also recommend you have a look at their FAQ.

If you have more questions let me know. I know BOINC can be a bit

overwhelming to a newcomer, it certainly took me a while to figure

things out (and I'm still learning stuff ;) ).

Thanks, for a very well written/detailed answer  :)

So I got boincstats BAM! and I'm not getting any work :(

I tried synchronizing it in Boinc Manager. All settings everywhere look ok.

Tried to reinstall Boinc, it didn't help. I'm starting to think that it's not Boinc fault....

What can I try to do next?

Sometimes it can take a while for BOINC to sync up and start working correctly.

Are your projects correctly displayed in boincstats BAM! (under "My Projects")?

Are your hosts correctly displayed?

Are your hosts attached to your projects? To check that, go to the "Hosts list" site,

select a host, then on the specific host's page, select "Edit projects" button,

and make sure to have a green check mark next to the projects your hosts is

supposed to be attached to.

Also, it could be that your CPID is not lined up yet between boincstats and the

projects you had already joined. It might take a while for them all to line up

correctly, but from what I understand it should work after a while (I can't

remember if I ever had this problem).

Obviously also make sure your settings on your individual project accounts are

correct (although if it was working before it should keep working).

Lastly, you could check the event log (found in "Advanved" in your boinc

manager).
