Kaby lake doesn't work with z390.

Hello!

My friend recently got a new motherboard and also new RAM. The motherboard he got is a "ROG STRIX Z390-F Gaming" and the RAM was some HyperX 3666MHz (can't remember the exact name) Anyhow, when we had put everything together and double checked that all the cables were connected it still didn't boot. It turns on for about 1 sec before shutting down again, also the CPU light on the motherboard goes red for a sec. So we checked if there were any pins bent, and there were none that we could see. However we did see some thermal paste on the CPU connectors so we wiped it of gently with some isopropyl alcohol 91%, and still didnt turn on. Got any ideas on what could have gone wrong?

Also I know he overclocked the CPU just a tiny bit with his old motherboard, from what I've read the CPU should go back to default when it goes into a new motherboard but I guess that could be incorrect?

Specs:

PSU: EVGA GQ 750W

GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio

CPU: Intel core I7 7700k

MB: ROG STRIX Z390-F Gaming

RAM: HyperX fury Black RGB 16GB 3600MHz DDR4

CPU cooler: Corsair Hydro H115i

Maybe the CPU power cable isn’t seated correctly, the overclock doesn’t transfer to new boards

Reminder⚠️

I'm just speaking from experience so what I say may not work 100%

Please try searching up the answer before you post here but I am always glad to help

I did check the CPU power cable on the motherboard and it was seated correctly, but I didn't check if it had come out a little bit from the PSU. Will have a check later.

Thanks for your reply!

Looks like somebody only looked at the socket layout instead of compatability.

Only Z270 and z170 (with a bios update though) supports kaby lake. No worries lol.

It's an easy mistake to make, thinking the socket type is all you should need. That's why it's important to use something like pcpp https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/

to try and make sure everything will work together in a build.

That's why in one way I prefer AMD now, the CPU will say which socket it works with eg AM4 and the motherboard will say AM4, there's no room for mistakes in that. Whereas intel is a minefield for people that don't know that certain CPUs only work with certain chipsets, regardless of socket layout being the same.

[edit] Yes AMD isn't perfect, there are some boards that won't work with certain CPUs, eg some or all b350 boards won't work with 3rd gen ryzen. But again this can be somewhat mitigated with the use of pcpp
