I need help choosing a GPU

Malerax

Hey guys,

For my build, I will be using an RTX 2080 super, and I'm not sure what company I want to buy from. I am debating between MSI's Super Gaming X TRIO, with a boost clock speed of 1845 MHz, or Gigabyte's 2080 Super Gaming, also with 1845 MHz boost clock, which is $100 cheaper than MSI.

I am open to suggestions on other 2080 super cards, but I would like similar or better boost clock speeds, and 3 fans.

Thanks guys!

It's an absolutely horrible time to be dropping that kind of money on a GPU. The new ones are right around the corner.

It'd be smarter to buy a used GPU to tide you over until the new ones launch.

Regardless of how much better the new cards will be, the 2080 super will still be an amazing card, new cards will always be just around the corner. My budget is strapped to the 2080 super range, and the 2080 super won't suddenly become useless once the new ones drop... So, unless the new cards have an equal or better card for the same price range, then I will wait, but until the prices drop I'm settling for a 2080 super...

from what i know, gigabyte gaming oc cards are a middle ground between turbo and 2 fans and their aorus line, which has insane cooling.

and from what i see, msi's gaming x trio version compares to gigabyte aorus version. -------------------------------------------^

personally, i bought the 2080 aorus (non super) and the temps are MAD.

on csgo, minecraft and valorant which are cpu intensive, the cpu doesnt go over 45c (with a little bit of modification to the fan curve)

with heavier titles like wd2, fortnite and overwatch the card doesnt go above 70c

go for the gaming x trio.

youre right.

i bought my 2080 aorus a month ago and im ABSOLUTELY LOVING IT. i upgraded from a gtx 650 and holy shit what a difference.

at my point of life right now, waiting until november to be able to buy the new cards is really pushing it. i wont be home for 3 years from March 2021 so spending 900 dollars on a gpu for 4 months is just not worth it since it would just collect dust.

i went from 80 fps on csgo to 300. and with this upgrade i finally unlocked the full potential of my old i5 3550 which was chocking at 4GHz with that gtx 650.

They wont become useless, but you are leaving an estimated 20-50% performance increase on the table by buying now and not in a month. Also, new graphics cards come out every 2 years with the occasional updated model coming out in the year between.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

My main concern is budget, I don't have the means to increase past the like of a 2080 super price (Which is up to $1500 NZD), so depending on the price to performance ratio of the new cards, and when they are announced will be my deciding factor, as I won't be buying the 2080 super for another month yet...

Not true. New cards come out every 2 years. This time they're expecting a significant performance increase around 50%, and 4x if you're talking about ray tracing.

No one said it would become useless, I said it's a poor time to purchase one, which it is. If you can afford a 2080S, you can afford a used card.

You do know that's how it works right? The 3070 will have about the performance of the 2080 Super, etc. In ray tracing, performance will be multitudes better.

think about it like this:

do you absolutely need to upgrade?

yes - 2080 super

no - wait

pretty sure that the only version that will be available with the new cards for the first month is the founders edition but someone current me if im wrong

Right now price is unknown but estimated to be about the same price as the 2080 super. But even if price goes up, a 3070 wouldn’t cost more than a 2080 super but it will be more powerful. Since you aren’t buying for another month, they will likely be announced by the time you are planning on buying. They might not be available for purchase at that time but will be a short while away from it and will be worth waiting.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.
