I got new laptop today. After unboxing it and make sure everything is up to date.  About 3h after everything is set, I check the ram usage and found out that the ram usage does not add up. I tried to run a few basic virus scan and ram/ssd test within windows 10 but to no avail. As a last resort, I booted into windows 10 safe mode with networking and the problem stop. Does anyone know what is wrong with my laptop? the laptop in reference is acer nitro 5 with single stick 8gb of ram @ 2999hz, i7 10th gen and gtx1650.

Your original post contains no images. Edit it, then copy & paste the images into it. Right now all we can see is a link that says "image.png", but when I click on it, the browser only shows a "404", meaning there is no image for us to see.

It has 8GB of RAM on Windows and Chrome is running, so that doesn't surprise me. When I still had 8GB of RAM in my laptop (before I upgraded it to 16GB) my idle load was also around 30-40% and with Chrome open it was easily at 50%, so nothing about this is unusual in my opinion. Also, the longer Windows is running (no matter if apps are open or not), the more memory it consumes, that is also a thing. When I start using it around midday, it is reasonable. After it ran a day I can close all apps and the memory usage is always increased for seemingly no reason, also typically Windows.

Yes I am aware of how memory intensive chrome can be but i dont understand how the usage dont add up you know what i mean?

Yes, finally :)

Chrome is a resource hog, unless you neuter it.

Windows 10 is a pig as well, using RAM and not telling you about it.

Sadly, the system, is running as it should, out of the box.

It would take some tweaking to shut up Windows and Chrome

If you switch to the "Performance" tab and then "Memory" in Task Manager, does it show some memory as hardware reserved?

Can you also switch to "Details", then add the column "NP pool" and sort by it?

Sometimes you get drivers that use a lot of memory but their usage doesn't show up in Processes.

is there any particular link that can show me how to shut them both up? at the very least minimise their usage?

With Chrome, you'd want to run things like uBlock Origin, HTTPS Everywhere, Disconnect and Decentraleyes.

Throw in flashcontrol (by Dave, IIRC) and AutoplayStopper for the damn autoplaying videos

Shutting up Windows 10 is more tricky.

Some of the more extreme measures can break windows, so be careful.

Look here for ideas:

o&o shutup10 is very nice

Take a look at the Resource Monitor. Yes, it shows 169MB as hardware-reserved, and it already subtracted them off the entire 8GB of RAM.

ya but that is not much. Plus it does not explain how if i boot into safe mode with networking then everything is down to 19%

Yeah, I missed that it was already visible in resource monitor, so that value is fine.

One other thing you can try is to switch to "Details" tab in task manager, then add the column "NP pool" and sort by it (descending). If a driver is using a lot of memory it should show up here, but it won't show up in Processes.

I'm going to assume you are using Win10 Home edition?

Look into (don't need it, but it's really great) Ultrasearch. Much better search program

You can also try this: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/rammap

It should show more details than task manager.
