Is this site legit? It looks semi-shady...

http://www.copyrighted.com/

If it's legit, does it legally copyright your stuff by US law?

2nd  part answered:

Is the copyright protection you provide valid worldwide?

Yes, Copyrighted.com provides a public date registration of your original digital creations. This process is verifiable proof worldwide that your digital creation was registered to you on a specific date.

If I was to copyright something I would probably speak to some kind of legal aid to see what I should do.

There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Just some helpful stuff: You're - You are, Your - Your car, They're - They are, Their - Their car, There - Over there.

This sir, is where you would be wrong.

Do I have to register with your office to be protected?

No. In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section “Copyright Registration.”

The copyright is everything but useful when you are trying to file suit on somebody for stealing your idea.

Fair enough.

However, unless it's registered with the Copyright office, you don't really have much protection. It's not an actual copy right.

I really recommend reading the .gov site.

Also, as has been stated, there is no need for registration of any form in order

to have copyright, however if somebody infringes on it and you wish to enfore

it (say, via lawsuit), further measures will be necessary, as said in the quotes above.

The linked website has nothing to do with whether or not you have copyright,

their service merely claims to help you prove that you had copyright beginning

on a certain date (it can be important to have reliable evidence on the timeline

in copyright cases - who was first, so to speak). Whether or not it's shady is

another matter, and I really can't judge on that. EDIT: It does seem

a bit strange to me that the service is free. What's their stream of revenue?/EDIT

To quote wikipedia:

In all countries where the Berne Convention standards apply, copyright is automatic, and need not be obtained through official registration with any government office. Once an idea has been reduced to tangible form, for example by securing it in a fixed medium (such as a drawing, sheet music, photograph, a videotape, or a computer file), the copyright holder is entitled to enforce his or her exclusive rights.[10] However, while registration isn't needed to exercise copyright, in jurisdictions where the laws provide for registration, it serves as prima facie evidence of a valid copyright and enables the copyright holder to seek statutory damages and attorney's fees. (In the USA, registering after an infringement only enables one to receive actual damages and lost profits.)

And the document linked by @CCap (page 3):

The way in which copyright protection is secured is frequently misunderstood. No publication or registration or other action in the Copyright Office is required to secure copyright. See the following note. There are, however, certain definite advantages to registration.

And then on page 7

In general, copyright registration is a legal formality intended to make a public record of the basic facts of a particular copy right. However, registration is not a condition of copyright protection. Even though registration is not a requirement for protection, the copyright law provides several inducements or advantages to encourage copyright owners to make registration. Among these advantages are the following:

[...]

Registration may be made at any time within the life of the copyright. Unlike the law before 1978, when a work has been registered in unpublished form, it is not necessary to make another registration when the work becomes published, although the copyright owner may register the published edition, if desired.

Also, I see no way in which this website would allow you to avoid the fees associated

with registering a copyright, since you'd still need to file an official registration

should you wish to bring forth a lawsuit even if you'd registered your content with

that site, at least as far as I understand things.
