Hi

I am looking in to build me a Ubiquiti home network. I don't have any camera. Look to get 1 Ubiquiti UniFi USG Security Gateway 1 Ubiquiti UniFi Switch 8 (60W) and 1 or 2 Access Point ( don't know which ones yet ) I seen a lot of videos on YouTube of people use this build whitout a cloudKey gen2. Do I need a Cloudkey gen2? It's just my simple home network

No, you don’t absolutely need one. You can use the controller on the phone app, a PC attached to the same network, on a RaspberryPi or in the cloud. The CloudKey just provides convenience and battery backup (at least the gen2).

I invested in a CloudKey Gen2 because I had bad experiences with losing my controller settings on a PC (laptop failed for a different reason altogether) and SD card corruption on a RPi when there was a sudden power loss. My entire Ubiquiti setup is attached to a UPS, which is a great investment.

When you compare the cost of a UDM and the total cost of getting components separately, you might find that the UDM comes out costing less. Plus, the UDM is an all-in-one device; if you need more ethernet ports just add a switch. However, people have been reporting problems with the UDM, which I think might be a controller problem. The individual components have matured enough to be stable with firmware/controller updates, which is why I haven’t converted to a UDM.

Linus did a re-network upgrade recently i would look at that because he has the gateway, router and cloud key all in one box

Ubiquiti has a consumer grade home wifi solution (i recommend) called amplifi and it allows the use of hardwired aps as well as mesh points. I you are a lot better off with this
