My friend's little brother has been wanting a computer recently, so my friend came to me to put together a parts list. I'm pretty deadset on everything in the list except for the GPU. The brother wants a dual monitor setup and to play games with at least 120fps (he never specified what games) but their family doesn't want him to go overboard on the price. I ended up deciding that because the brother is only 12, he doesn't need a cutting edge card, and I wouldn't spend more than $200 on it.

I ended up deciding on an 8gb RX580, which retail for around $170. However, I also remembered that a friend is selling his old EVGA 1070 for around that price. I'm trying to find information regarding which is better. A few youtube videos say the 580 is better, while most forums say the 1070 is better.

Or, some people say neither and to just get a 1650/1650S/1660/1660S/1660TI/whateverthehecknvidiahasbeenmakingasofrecent, but I don't know where to start there so if one of these would be better, you'd have to specify which and why. Thanks.

If the 1070 is from a friend then get that. Its basically a 1660 super ( maybe a little slower/ faster ) With a bigger frame buffer.

What's your budget for the build and what are you pairing it with?

They don't want to go over 1k USD, but that's including the 2 monitors the little brother wants. The budget for the actual computer is around $850. Pairing it with a Ryzen 5 3600.

Yea a 1070 would work nicely. And is certainly better than a 580.

Do you have a parts list? $850 seems high for a build with a sub $200 GPU and a 3600.

OH heck I'm stupid and said the wrong thing again. they said they wanted to keep it under a thousand dollars, and the $850 is including the two monitors. The computer itself is around $630. I don't know why I said the other thing.

Here's the parts list if you still want it

I would suggest getting an aftermarket cooler, even if it's just a budget one like a Hyper 212. The stock Wraith Stealth just doesn't do the job for the 3600.

Personal experience. The 3600 will easily go 90C+ with the stock cooler when stressed. Maybe that's not totally realistic, but it's better to stay well under thermal throttling temps. That and just literally read anything online. The Stealth is crap. The Prism is a decent cooler, but the ones AMD throws in with the cheaper chips are universally bad.

Not under a normal workload? Yea then it's fine.

Define normal workload. You don't know what this is going to be used for, let alone how it's going to fare 2 or three years down the line. There is no reason for a chip like a 3600 to be even knocking on the door of 95C. And, it's worth mentioning that this was in a relatively cool room, in a case with good air flow and plenty of secondary cooling. Put it under a desk on a hot day in a cheap case without adequate secondary cooling. Then what? An adequate air cooler is a minor investment and worth every penny.

Even if it was. ( Which a stock cooler is still more than enough) a hyper 212 is certainly not it. Not the best value air cooler considering there are better options for the same price.

Still better than the Stealth, and I said "like". Doesn't have to be that one, but gives an idea of budget. Yeah, of course it's not the best, but there's also a reason is probably the best selling budget cooler of all time. It does a decent job for a reasonable cost. Just because you have an opinion, doesn't make it fact.

Gammaxx 400 is only $25, and beats out the H212. (and the V2 of it has a better mounting system too) I know from personal experience that overclocking the 3600 to its limits still won't push it over about 75°c on this cooler.
