Problematic GPU temps on Rust?

probablydumb

Hey so im making this post since i discovered everytime i play rust my gpu temps go up to 83-82 and stay there constantly.I know people have said 83-82 isn't good but it isn't bad so i just wanna ask you guys what you think. The only place i get these type of temps are Firestrike stress tests and Resident Evil 2

What is your frame rate at? If I remember correctly rust isn't a super high spec game, perhaps your fps is super high and you are overworking your GPU? Are there frame limiting options? Vsync etc.

yeah 80C isnt great but isnt terrible you dont wanna run it at that 24/7 but for an ordinary gaming session its fine. it you wanna lower it turn on Vsync or lower your gpu clocks a bit

If you judge a fish based on its ability to climb trees it will go its whole life thinking its a failure.

Well set a custom fan curve. Are you always running that ambient? Or are you just in a heat wave? Because that's hot my man.

You might NEED a custom curve.聽 My ASUS RTX 2080 stock curve tops out at 40% fan speed for some bizarre reason, causing the GPU to stay in the mid 80s under load.

Router:聽 Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)

The modern Nvidia cards will simply clock down when reaching a temperature "target". You can manually raise it.聽

If you don't touch it, it will be at around 80 degree.聽

So as long as you aren't bothered by the reducing fps after some time (and then they should stay the same), it's totally fine.聽

My gtx 1070 is running every few days at 84 degrees Celsius for about 2-3 hours (I have a pretty hot silent case....) since 2016.

No issues, still at the same 2050 mhz overclock.聽

Jay's 2 cents did a video on hit.. The bios has some heat protection built in.聽

His 2080 shut off at 99掳 after disabling the fans and pointing a heat gun at it.. Lol.聽

So don't worry! As long as it's below 90掳 it should last longer than you ever gonna use it!聽

About fan curve:

install msi afterburner from guru3D and copy this:

In most games the card stays below 75掳c, in some games it reaches 84掳c. Easy to adjust.
With the slightly plateau and the hysteresis it should stay kinda consistent and not ramp up and down the fans all the time.

Yeah those heat waves will get you. Just download MSI Afterburner and mess with it. All you do is drag dots around on a graph to increase the fan speed when it hits a certain temp. I.e. you can make it so once it hits 65C the fan goes from 40% to 50%, etc, etc.

Turing maxes out at 88C, so 90C is pretty much a no no. Also it's not entirely based around a "temp" target. A GPU isn't trying to reach that target then downclock. For instance I've never messed with my temperature target, and I've never gone over 65C.

What do you mean by "maxing out"?聽

The bios doesn't allow the slider to be raised higher in msi afterburner but that's all.聽

It's called Temperatur target. It's more like a limit, I agree.聽

However there's no issue with high temperatures apart from "degrading" over long periods and if it won't shut down at 99掳c, the silicons might leave the working point and the resistances might change and cause a shortage.聽

But nothing will meld.. And I trust the manufacturers that they will know when the change of the silicon's resistance will become critical.聽

However the latest cards are so efficient and easily cooled, that the cooling required to stay below 70掳c won't cause noise issues.聽

So I absolutely agree that the OP should create a fan curve and drop the temperatures.聽

But it's not like he is risking his card or pc when he plays a few hours of rust at below 90掳c.

What I find a bit weird about this card is that it will apparently:

- run above 80掳c on default settings

- might clock down instead of raising fan speeds

- seems not to increase fan speeds...聽

My msi card will go up to 100% fan speed before throttling when reaching 80掳 and won't reach more than 81掳c but instead throttle down if 100% fan speed isn't enough (tested this by locking fan speed at minimum).聽

Sorry, I mean the max temperature for Turing is 88C.

And yes, I also agree it's more of a "limit" than a target. I think we're on the same page.

I also agree with modern cooling. In a 20C ambient, and my 2080S pinned at 100% with an OC on, it never went over 50% fan speed, and never passed 65C. I think the heat wave OP is in is killing him. And while his temps are perfectly safe, I feel the lower he can get them the better (in general), and once the heat wave passes he'll have some great temps.

Alright so i applied a fan curve and in the first 20-30 minutes of playing rust the temps we're sitting at 77-76c and after it started going up all the way to 83c.The server i was on had a decent amount of players a lot of structures (bases) and a WHOLE lot of explosions shooting and etc.I think the fan curve helped but im not sure by how much

What case and where/which/how many case fans do you have?聽

If the heat can't get out of the pc case, the gpu will only push hot air onto the cooler...聽

Also what level of fan speed were you on at the end? Is the fan curve maxing out to 100% fan speed?聽

Should be okay, airflow and heat wise. Of course a mesh front is a lot better but you got intakes from top to bottom and 3 fans so enough air should get sucked in.聽

At 30 degrees ambient, I think all case fans should be at 100%. Then normally a gpu fan will match the noise level of the case fans at 60-70%.

Depending on the gpu and case fan models of course...聽

Against your legs though? The 3 at the front should suck air into the case, while the rear and the top Fan push the air out of the case.聽

Not sure how your case is positioned that you can feel the hot air on your legs?聽

But anyway, gpu temperature is okay so feel free to just keep things as they are!聽

Have to say I worry a bit about your cpu now though... What Temps are you getting on it?聽

Im upgrading the cooler to the nzxt kraken x53 and reapplying the paste. In rust it gets about 75-79c which i know isn't good but again not terrible.Normally in games it gets 60-73c max but in games like rust and gta 5 and stress tests it gets about 75-80c and rendering in premiere pro 72c
