Dual CPU socket

I have a Dell precision T5600 dual CPU motherboard with 8 Ram slots. Currently only one CPU processor is installed. The installed cpu is a Xeon E5-2640 2.5Ghz processor with 4 8GB DDR3 1333 RAM memory. I’m thinking of buying a Xeon E5-1620 3.6Ghz and 4 8GB DDR3 1600 RAM sticks.
Kindly advise me if  both CPUs work for gaming or just one CPU.  And if just one CPU, which cpu will be used for gaming when both CPUs are installed. Please advise me the best way to proceed.

You will need to install an identical CPU into both sockets for it to work. The single faster CPU would be better for gaming.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

 

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

You can't mix and match CPUs, they must be identical.

First of all 

You'll need the exact same cpu 

Second of all 

Will it be utilized for games ? Most likely if not definitively no.

If you want to use both sockets, the processors need to be identical and they both need to be 2xxx-series (the leading number is the number of supported sockets).

Not sure why everyone's saying it needs to be the exact same; at least for Nehalem/Westmere Xeon's you can mix and match, as long as the Core Count, TDP, and Cache matches up (within the same series). Did this change with Sandy/Ivy?

It's not the CPUs per se, it's the system. The precision T5600 that will kick up a fuss (I have a t5610, you can't mix n match cpus)

Maybe it is a Dell thing. Mine's an HP.

You only need to ask the question once. We'll see it eventually.

 

You can try it, but I can really only guarantee it will work with exactly identical CPU models (maybe even down to stepping).

If you look at my prior post, you'll see the answer is no, no you cannot. Not with a Dell Precision. They must be *identical* CPUs, right down to the stepping, otherwise the Dell with pitch a fit.
