Calling all Sys Admins

So I'm in a bit of a predicament with two labs I have been tasked with cleaning up. They assign the IP based upon the location of where the server is. So for example Server1 is in rack R44 and U position 22 so the IP would be 10.0.244.22. To break it down the x.x.244 signifies rack 44 and the x.x.x.22 signifies U position 22. Then the name will be the model number plus rack and U position, for example DL360gen10r44u22. Now this might seem nice as you can look at an IP and instantly know where it is or name and find it in the lab. But the reason they want to be able to find it so well is servers are moved around constantly. As soon as one server is inaccurate they all are as you cannot rely on the IP or name. A server with IP 10.0.244.33 in U position 20 now means the server in U 33 is inaccurate and the IP ending in .20 is wrong and who knows where they are now. 

 

I'm looking for some way to have persistence when a server is moved. My idea is setup a DNS so I can do an nslookup on the IP and find the server name which will be the way to identify where it is. The local sys admin will have to change the name when they move the server but this doesn't require changing the bmc address and eth address, which require a restart of the system as a rename does not. Any input would be appreciated.

I think the biggest reason systems are moved so much is remote teams are using them to test and benchmark hardware and want different hardware configs constantly swapped in and out. I think it they are moving them from an internal to external network is why the move but there are better ways to do this. As for description they don't really have static jobs or purposes so that wouldn't be too useful.

The trouble is, from a "proper network setup" perspective, you dont  move a server. And that's causing the others heads to explode.

Assuming Linux hosts...

 

If they can reliably change the server hostnames to match their rack location and u number..   you could write a shell script to run from Cron , once an hour or sooner, that will change the IP address when it sees the hostname change. 

Can Anybody Link A Virtual Machine while I go download some RAM?

Right but changing the IP would require a restart of the server which is not really ideal
