Recent Topics change in behaviour?

porina

Not sure if this is a change or if I done something stupid. In the past, if I press the "Recent Topics" button it would show me the thread title, and an excerpt of the latest post in the thread. Yesterday it showed up in compact mode without me intentionally doing anything. I switched it back to expanded mode, but since then it seems to show the first post under the thread title. I'd like it to go back to showing the latest post, but if there is a user setting for it, I can't find it.

looks like all the menus in the activity streams have been changed to this behavior. Not sure if it has anything to do with the changes @colonel_mortis made yesterday mentioned here: https://linustechtips.com/main/profile/10813-colonel_mortis/?status=268005&type=status

Example: When I view content I posted in, it no longer shows the last reply on the thread, but either nothing, or the OP post now, similar to what @porina mentioned in the "recent Topics" section.

Screenshot example from this thread specifically:

This was a deliberate change, to more closely align with my understanding of how people want to use activity streams. Did you use the streams that showed the latest post of each topic, and if so what were you using it for/why did you like it? It's not impossible for me to bring it back, but there's a bit more effort involved for it to be added as a third option.

The default stream used to be Unread Content, and it was changed to Recent Topics. Unread Content is still around, although the behaviour has changed slightly as mentioned.

You can still get a stream of all comments by changing the "Show me" option, but when you select "Items only" it will now actually display items only rather than just filtering to one comment per item.

Part of it might be "I want it to do whatever it used to do" because I'm used to it. To expand on that, I like to see the latest post as it gives some (random) indication of where the conversation is going, which often the case is not where the OP was. I may or may not decide to jump in based on that. If I only have the OP and thread title to go on, I can only decide on that.

I'm navigating the forum on muscle memory at this point. I push whatever button is in that location, so if you changed the name, I hadn't noticed :D

I know I persoonally use the Content I posted in section to see whats been new posted in it and see what the last comment in the thread is.

Now that this change has been out for a while, have you changed your thoughts at all?

I still prefer the previous style of showing the latest post in a thread, not the 1st post. Same reasons as before. I have no idea where the conversation is going. Once a bunch of posts have been made, the OP may be irrelevant.

I agree with @porina I like seeing the last post when I look through the threads instead of the OP and having to guess/remember how many posts were in the thread previously. This is especially helpful when newer forum members dont know all the ins and outs and dont quote replies so we can see them.
