Changes to run 4k Monitors

Budget (including currency): $2,200

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Hi!

This is my first post on Linus Tech Tips and I would greatly appreciate y'all's help!

I currently have a Dell XPS 15 2019 Model (7590) and it's connected to a dell 1440p monitor (S2719DM) via USB-C.

I want to upgrade my monitor to the ACER Predator X27 or x32 basically a 4K, 120hz+, and responsive monitor so that I can game in 1440 p and watch content in 4k and edit the occasional 4K video files.

Right now I'm a casual gamer and don't play any triple A games but I'm looking to start. And I really enjoy watching the highest quality content. I just don't have a TV because I don't have room for one and I don't really want to get one.

What upgrades do I need for my set up to drive 4k 144hz monitors?

Is it possible to use just a thunderbolt 3 hub such as the caldigit TS3 plus to drive the monitor with just my laptop? I know they can drive 4k monitors at 60hz but is it the same at 144hz?

I looked into an egpu, but if I was spending $300 for an enclosure and $500 for the gpu and only getting 80% of the potential, I was thinking it would be a better value to just build a PC. Is my reasoning wrong?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

yes building a pc makes much more sense than egpu. try this:

you hsould wait for around september-october for new ryzen 4th gen and new rtx 3000 - series gpus. but that will do.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!

When the 4th gen comes out would it be possible to run the set up with 4th gen Ryzen 7 and a rtx 2060 (bec I'll be gaming in 1440 p?

Also is it impossible for my laptop to drive a 4K monitor at 120hz even with a thunderbolt dock?
