HDCP's ugly head again

Go to solution Solved by emosun,

that tv is almost 15 years old rear projection and most likely just doesn't support any form of hdcp , so the roku is having none of it

Our newer TV broke so we've pulled this older TV

https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/product/kds-r60xbr1/manuals

out of our basement for the sake of saving some money. We're trying to hook up our Roku 3 to it directly and no matter what we try, we keep getting this screen.

To start, after each attempt we restart both devices. We've also messed with the display settings on the Roku and it won't even play 720p video with out this error pop up. We can't find anything on HDCP in the TV manual and there's nothing on it's menu screen. We've tried at least 2 different HDMI cords in the multiple HDMI connection slots. Currently, there is nothing else connected to the TV.

Update: We tried running our DVD player on it and same problem. IDK if that narrows anything down but...

Any help or direction is really appreciated!

..... you might have success running the roku through some sort of amplifier or dvd/bluray/hometheatre system FIRST that has hdcp then outputting to the tv.

Manual shows no mention of HDCP, so that dinosaur is just too old.

I am wondering if something has failed in the TV circuitry, like a board has got bad.

Hasn’t HDCP been around since HDMI has been on consumer devices?  I really doubt Sony didn’t implement HDCP on their TVs, unless they were hoping to roll their own. Looking at the Sony q&a on Sony page for that particular tv shows that hdcp is in theory supported, at least earlier iterations.

Interestingly enough I decided to do a quick google search of this tv model and problem, there is still some confusion on whether or not the tv supports HD or. Some people said have had success with replacing the board the controls the HDMI ports or the PD (?) board.

so who really knows?

Yes but from the history of HDCP it would only support at most revision 1.1, which I wouldn't expect any recent device to be happy with.

Hard to find good info but it seems the Roku might want at least 1.4 and that came out in 2009.

the Roku stick requires an HDMI 1.3 port with hdcp minimum. (a lot of tvs with 1.3 didnt have it thou)

like others said. best bet is to use it on a receiver, home theater system, sound bar. basically anything newer with a hdmi input
