Minecraft and League FPS nirvana

p0r0x

Hello,

guys and girls of the LTT forum.

I'm once again asking for your tech support. (EPIC OG JOKE. I'm so sorry xD )

This time it is about FPS nirvana. This term describes the insane FPS some folks are getting in their games.

I was wondering how the hellfire they get like 300+ FPS in a game so simple like Minecraft and Leauge of Legends.

So I did some research and found that some games are much more in need of CPU horsepower and other games rely on strong raw GPU power.

In my example, Minecraft is very RAM and CPU hungry.

I have a XEON E3-1231 v3 in my system, which is serving a pretty good job for my mid- to low-end build. So My friend runs a less powerful CPU and is getting like 300 FPS in our Minecraft world. Overall, he is using the same OS and nearly the same settings. But in the same world, I'm only getting something in the neighbourhood of 130 to 150 FPS.

For those who may claim, that it is because of the different settings in-game- Well we compared this with the exact same settings, no resource pack and shader installed. The only mod we used was the latest version of optifine in MC 1.15.2

So if somebody knows why he is getting double the FPS with a slower machine, feel free to reply.

Oh and I maybe have to mention that none apps or other programs were running in the background except TeamSpeak3.

I hope you have a nice week and as always stay safe tech fam.
Yours p0r0x

Hi there,

what version of Minecraft are you using?
The java version or the newer one?

What do you mean with less powerful cpu?

What RAM do you and your friend use?

What GPUS ?

Greetings

Minecraft is actually more GPU dependent than most people think. Whats your both GPUs?

Greetings

We are running Minecraft 1.15.2

We both updated Java yesterday.

He uses a CPU with lower clock speed. Maybe I should have chosen another word...

I use Kingston HyperX PC3-10700 2x8gb in DualChannel.

As far as I know my freind is using something similar.

I use a Sapphire Nitri+ RX 580

He uses my old GTX 1050

I use a RX 580 with 8 Gb of GDDR5 from Sapphire Nitro+ slightly OC

He uses a slightly OCed GTX 1050 (my old card)

Hmm

You are sure your RAM is in Dual Channel Mode?

I asked for the "slower cpu" because you java is a little shit and usually works on few cores.
So having a cpu with high clock speeds gives an advantage over multithreading in this rare case.

What Mainboard are you using?
Maybe the pcie lanes are bottlenecking your gpu and cpu?

Dont think so. Im using a ASRock H97M Pro4

and cpuz confirmed the dual channel mode

hmm

Are you both using different Harddrives to run the game?

If not then i guess you should check if you have the current bios, the current chipset drivers etc.

I am using a DRAM less SSD and he is using a WD HDD

I updated Bios not long ago due a graphic issue...

Xeons generally have poor single thread performance especially compared to traditional Intel desktop CPUs. Older titles like LoL and Minecraft cant properly utilize multiple cores so single thread performance is more important.

My stuff:

Spoiler

CPU :  Intel i5 8400 | GPU : MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4GB

RAM : 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 @ 3600MHz

Mouse : Logitech G502 HERO SE | Keyboard : Mountain Everest Max w/ Cherry MX Brown

Headset : Beyerdynamics DT990 Pro 250Ω w/ AT2020USB+

Monitor : Acer XF240H @  144Hz

That's your problem. Radeon GPUs performance in OpenGL is terrible compare to Nvidia GPUs if you're using Java version.
Try Bedrock and compare with your friend?
