Router that caches content?

Looking to (virtualize or run natively on spare machine) a router like pfsense, but with caching capabilities. I've tried lancache in many different configs and it's not working for me. Any help is much appreciated.

what type of stuff are you trying to cache? 

 

I think pfsense has a package for caching with squid.

 

Untangle has this built in aswell

caching is hard now as so much is https now.

http and https using a custom cert if possible.

I still don't think you will get much benfit, your much better off getting. bigger pipe from your isp.

 

But give untalge a shot for a easy to use solution, otherwise pfsense, or just setup squid manually.

I've heard some isps use a cache how would that be done.

There is normally custom boxes being used. Like you get get a box from netflix to cache netflix streams.

 

Putting a cache in the middle can cause some problems, esp if your doing https aswell. Games are the few exceptions that work pretty well.

Caching https is a HUGE security hole, because you only ever know you are securely connected to your cache, not if its secure from the cache to the server.  I don't personally think its worth it.
