Ryzen 5 3600 VS Threadripper 1900X

I've been playing with the idea of updating my old gaming PC that i put together about 5 years ago. Like many of us, i'd love to be running a threadripper, but they are very cost prohibitive for most of us. I think I can justify a first Gen 1900X at a little over $200.

 

My question is, do any of you think its worth it to get a "slow/old" threadripper, or should i spend that same ~$200 on a current gen R5 3600? 

 

Only differences i can see is +2 cores on the 1900x, but massively higher TDP.

You would be doing yourself a SIGNIFICANT disservice going for the older, much slower TR.

IPC gains from first gen to 3rd gen are massive.

Can you justify the $300+ motherboard for Threadripper for a sub par CPU vs CPU for majority of users?

$250 is where the sTR4 motherboards start, but yes, that is also a consideration.

For the TR effect then is the reasoning

 

No I wouldn't.  Simply because even the TR 2990wx I get to use, was replaced by a R9 3950x for productivity.  Generationally things just get better.  The 2990wx is now a server instead.
