Boot Time

Cab1920

I have a 15 second boot time with an M.2 SSD. Should this be faster? I have just built this PC.

Its not only hardware. Software has impact on boottimes too.

15s is nothing i would worry much about. My System has 11s.

The shortest boot time is ~5sec. That is the moment you hit the power button to the desktop (assuming auto-login).

The problem, is that if you have a dedicated GPU, the 5sec boot time goes at the bin, because Nvidia and AMD GPUs (as no reviewer's measure this, and most don't seem to care), takes time to boot, so your screen if turned off for a moment. You need Intel integrated graphics to enjoy the possibility of 5sec boot time. Not sure on AMD APUs.

If you have an anti-virus (beside Windows one) or other security software, they might load up during boot time, and perform a mini scan on things, which takes a few seconds.

Make sure your system is properly configured too:

  • UEFI enabled
  • CSM disabled
  • XMP set to Profile 1
  • Legacy Boot disabled
  • Fast Boot enabled (or set to the highest speed, if you have this kind of options)
  • POST delay set to 0sec/disabled
  • No HDD
  • All unused hardware disabled
  • First boot device set to your M.2 NVMe SSD
  • Windows Fast Startup feature is enabled (enabled by default)
  • Hibernation feature in Windows is enabled (enabled by default)
  • No startup programs (including Task Scheduler tasks)
  • Limited to none non-Microsoft Services starting at startup

Here is Microsoft showing off Windows 8 beta with fast startup:

Takes 7-8 sec, on this old, 9 years old laptop with a SATA SSD.

And here is ASRock, doing its demo back in 2012:
