How to wire a custom PC power button to my PC

darcymccracken

Hey there,

I have just finished building my PC today and I have put it in a spot on my shelf, however it makes my power button on the case hard to reach, how would I go about wiring a switch like this (attached) to my PC to make it turn on when I flip the switch? Are there any tutorials out there or has anyone done it before who can give a step by step guide?

Thank you!

It should be as easy as soldering the positive and negative leads from the switch to wires, then connecting those wires to the corresponding front panel header. It might not work right for a toggle switch, a button would probably work better.

You don't want the power switch to have a constant connection in the On state since what a power switch does is - it connects the ground wire (black) and the +5V (green wire) for a few moments.

You can get momentary toggle style switches.

Any sort of switch you like with momentary action.

You want to use a NO contact.

What country/supplier?

Can you solder ?

Do you want it mounted to something or just floating ?

Retain both switches?

Somewhere to bring the cables to your motherboard header ?

Im in Australia

I soldered like once before but happy to get into it

Just floating, something easy to access but might want to mount it to something later

Doesnt matter about retaining both

What does this mean?

I meant if you have any holes or grommets in your case already you could pull the cable through to get to the motherboard or want to drill or notch a PCIe bracket or similar ?

The switch doesn't have any polarity.

I can probably make one up or happy enough to guide you through.

i mean there a few all ready that you can buy but if you want to diy that cool too. so the mb power header need's DuPont  connectors. some mb have the power switch + and - (dose not mater what way) with each other so a 2pin DuPont will work. some have them spaced out so you need 2x 1pin DuPont. as the guys said before me posting you need a momentary switch of some sort. (aka) you can just have 2 wires touch each other that will work too. you can buy one that go's out the pci slot or you can find a way to get it out side the case. ill leave that up to you.

you need an (ON)/OFF toggle switch, rather than an ON/OFF.  the parenthesis around it indicates that it's a momentary switch.  (ON)/OFF toggles are kinda weird but you can get them.

something like in this link should work for you.

https://smile.amazon.com/Morris-Products-Momentary-Contact-Toggle/dp/B005GDG2EY/

alternatively with some control logic you could use an ON/ON toggle so that one position is on while the other is off, where the (ON)/OFF switch will bounce back to the off position when you let go.  I think just a simple momentary relay should work.

Sorry for late reply, yeah I have an open air case so wiring is not an issue for me, but I'd like to wire a power and reset button in, have you done this before?
