Linux and Windows dual boot

Is there a downside to dual booting Linux and windows to the same drive? i mean like will there be a performance decrease from installing the two OSs on the same ssd?

There is a little bit longer boot time, and if you go to remove linux, it can make windows NOT boot until you fix the BootRec.

Whatever you do to the SSD slowly kills it, other than that only little longer boot time, because of extra boot menu to go through.

Having two OSs installed requires additional space on your SSD. That's about it. Only one OS will be active at a time, so it doesn't require additional performance or anything.

 

As has been pointed out, the boot menu where you select which OS to boot can increase time until the OS boots slightly.

 

You can configure the amount of time it should wait before booting the default OS (or last used OS) and you can simply make a choice to continue booting.

Don't know which distribution of Linux you're using, but here's a tutorial for Ubuntu: https://www.ostechnix.com/configure-grub-2-boot-loader-settings-ubuntu-16-04/

 

Most distributions are going to use GRUB2. They might differ in where the configuration files are located and which command you need to run to update it, but the general configuration should be the same. You probably want to take a look at "GRUB_DEFAULT" and "GRUB_TIMEOUT".
