I have a question what makes a difference in an air cooler as far as contact with the cpu is concerned thermal paste or thermal pads? i am using a be quiet dark rock pro4 air cooler.

There's not a huge difference. I haven't looked into it a ton, but I think that the thermal transfer is the same, give or take some degrees depending on the paste and pad quality

I haven't looked into it too much but it depends on what quality the thermal pads are. If you get quality thermal pads, the perforce will be equivalent to the average thermal paste, but they will last longer since they don't dry out.
