Hi,

Building a new Unraid NAS for Plex, Vm's & Docker as well as mass storage. Spec's at the bottom, primary question. For my primary storage pool if i start with 2x8tb, 1x5tb & 1x 2tb then proceed to migrate data from my old nas approx 10tb will i have enough initial storage after parity and overhead? Following this i will then add another 5tb and 2tb drive into the pool.

Secondly, my 2x500gb SSD's I was planning as mirrored VM hosting space. Am i better to have these drives just for VM's and Containers or use them as cache drives and store the VM's and Containers in the primary storage pool?

Does this all sound reasonable?

Thanks for any constructive help in advance.

Spec's

Unraid NAS

One of the 8 TB drives will serve as the parity drive with the remaining drives as storage, so you'll have 8+5+2 = 15 TB of space available. The losses due to formatting are low.

You can set the SSDs as cache drives and still store the VMs and Containers on them. The only reason to designate the drives for the VMs only would be if you didn't want to use virtual disks. Or if you are concerned about the VMs needing more space on the fly which may not be available on the cache drive.

Yes you will have enough. One of your 8TB's will have to be the Parity disk. The rest can be data disks giving you 15TB, so more than 10TB once formatted

Personally this is how I have it configured. I left them out of the storage pool as unassigned devices, and created a mirror. You could probably do that with MDADM, I used the ZFS Plugin and ZFS to create my mirror. Then mapped my docker & vm paths. You can do that under Settings > Docker, and Settings > VM Manager (Advanced View)
