An external hard drive would work too I suppose. Whatever you decide to use, you do have to format it, which erases all data.

Honestly I would suggest just getting a 16-32GB flash drive, which would be under 10 USD. Really helpful to just have.

I know you can download and mount the iso locally to upgrade or repair but I don't believe you can use that to do an install. You definitely need another device to do a fresh install though.
