Cheapest linux lab (Cloud or Pi)

Which is the cheapest way to have a personal Linux server.. is it the cloud or raspberry pi.

I tried the free trail of Google cloud. It is a bit complicated for Google VM to ssh. Also I don't think i can afford Google VM after the trail period. Don't have that much money.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Bob

Go cloud bay far for usability. it's a cheaper initial cost but will quickly exceed the pi's in a few months

You are right its costly. A general purpose Google VM with 1vCPU and 1.7 GB ram costs $180 a year... Its way costly for a simple instance.

Either local or VPS is going to be cheaper, unless you need the reliability and flexibility offered by the cloud. Local is usually not as good if you need a machine that is available on the internet.

If you need reliability, 24/7 monitoring, 99.9999% uptime, backups etc. then the cloud may be cheaper, if you factor in the cost in terms of employees needed to do all of that. Meaning it's mostly an option for (smaller) businesses that need the machines but don't have the personnel, skillset and room to do all of that on their own.

@Eigenvektor Now it makes sense. Like LInus Tech Tips who use their own server to storage their data and workspaces.

The cheapest way is just to create a Linux VM on your machine. If you're using Windows 10, then just use Hyper-V which is built in, Oracle Virtualbox, or VMware Workstation Player.
