I have a Pi4 4GB version. I had it since christmas. It's sitting on my shelf. Not really collecting dust, as it has an aluminum "cage". Bought case recently, looks cool.

Recently I've been watching different videos on how to set it up as a NAS, running OMV (OpenMediaVault)

The problem is, I don't have any drives. I "DO" have 3.5" HDDs, but all of them are less than 1TB. So, I been looking at laptop external hdd's. That need no external power. I'm trying to find out if I should get an external or get an internal, and just get an enclosure. I read up about both, and each have their pro and cons.

Can you shove me in the right direction? Price, keep low as you can without going with the no-names or ones we never heard of. I prefer to get 2 and RAID1 them. (whatever you call that in software RAID, same principle) 1TB "should" be enough, but If it is possible to go higher for a few dollars more, I'd take that.

might still want a powered hub as you don't want to pull much usb power from a pi

Do you really need raid?  Id just get one as a backup, or use a block backup.

Id probalby get a 3.5 external, then they don't pull usb power, and there cheaper per tb normally too.

Yeah, power hub would be better... BUT, there's still the cost involved.

It's not going to be RAID. Just a software RAID. I can't think of the name off the hook.

I'll look at that.

Now that I think of it, is there any difference between SATA and SAS? In performance? For sheer backup?

SOftware raid is still raid. But I don't think you want raid here, esp if cost is a issue.

Lots of differences, but for this use case, you won't notice a difference

Do you havea. budget? If you want a cheap nas, just make your desktop a nas.

I thought software RAID was different. BUT, all I need is a mirrored drive. I think you can do that without RAID, right? Through OMV?

OK, I won't mess with that fiasco, then.

Well, my money is a little scarce right now. But seeing I already have a system for it. (My Pi4) Sorta a no brainer.

But, once I sell off some of my computer junk, I should have money again.

Do you really need raid though? Id just run a single drive. But mdadm or other software raid will work fine.
