Understanding CPU specs

Hello,

 

Good day, basically I'd just like to have much clearer explanation with the CPU specs primarily to Processor Base Frequency and Max Turbo Frequency. 

 

For example the i7 10700k running at Processor Base Frequency 3.80 GHz and Max Turbo Frequency 5.10 GHz.

Is the Processor Base Frequency the speed all time like when idle and gaming? If so what is the Max Turbo for? Or Is the Base Frequency the speed when computer on idle or when running basic task that can handle easily and pretty old games too, and the Max Turbo will kick in automatically when it detects it needs more power? Does the Max Turbo runs automatically? If not how do you make it run to 5.10ghz? What is the main purposes between these 2?

 

Sorry if its kinda confusing, I re-read it and I personally got confused too. HAHAHHAAHA

 

And lastly when you overclock it do you increase the Base and the Turbo frequency?

But in short the base clock speed is what the CPU runs at when idle and for low usage tasks, and it can turbo up-to its max turbo frequency when the tasks are more demanding and in order to complete the task faster it boosts up to that given speed, thus completing the task faster. If you overclock you lock all cores to that given speed permanently, so it will sustain those overclock speeds at all times. So this would be the new 'base' clock speed, and it would not turbo past that given frequency.
