LG 55" OLED Review up on Rtings

SolarNova

UPDATE:

For any1 interested.

Just got a notification from Rtings that they have bought a CX 48" and will be testing soon.

Keep an eye out for the review if , like me, ur planning on purchasing the 48" OLED.

For any1 interested in the new CX series, Rtings.com has released their 55" review.

Im personal somewhat disappointment in the motion results, it could be attributed to immature firmware, especially in regards to 120hz BFI performance. Hopefully it will be updated.

https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/cx-oled

I'm hoping they review the 48", as it seemed to be more aimed at gaming than the larger models. Though as it stand its seems rtings is not planning to review it.

if they get enough requests they may change their mind.

EDIT: Current issues with C9 and new issues with CX

AVS, hardforum, and reddit discussions on the CX and C9 series have been reporting some new issues and reoccurring old issues.

The worst is that enabling VRR destroys black levels. So thats now 3 issues with VRR.. the 120hz image doubling, raised black levels, and increased input latency.

Theres also bugs with eARC, and Dobly Vision also raising black levels.

So yeah being consumer OLED it's still using 'sample and old' so motion will still be blurry even on 120Hz as well BFI not even working properly at that Hz.

Thanks.  A real review.

What it does not tell me is why I should buy it over the C9.

The 55" CX is at Best Buy for $1800 and that is enough to put me off considering the C9 is going for $300 less.

hi guys,

is there any updates on the bugs?

I hadn’t noticed this thread and posted about this TV last night.

The CX range is an entry level OLED so i know i am not expecting miracles, but would it work ok for PC gaming?

Are there any alternatives to the CX for the same price with the G-sync feature?

having trouble finding B9 in stock in the uk as it has been on sale.

thanks :)

Yes.

LG is aware (more specifically the engineers were informed directly by AV enthusiasts) and is working on a firmware update to fix the issues. new firmware version is currently in testing in China region.

Additionally. rtings.com has informed us that they are going to review the CX 48" as a monitor after much requests. Usualy they only review 1 size per range of displays, they have already reviewed the 55" CX if ur interested, the TLDR of the review is that for normal TV viewing its near identical to the C9.

thank you!

Is it safe to buy the CX?

i don’t have thousands to buy the state of the art...

what graphics card would you advise me to pair with it seeing as HDMI 2.1 doesn’t exist yet?

cheers :)

If u want the 48" , get a CX (its the only option), if u want a 55"+ , u can save some money and get the C9.

Do remember ur dealing with an OLED, ull have to take precautions using it for PC use, some habit changes as well.

As for GPU, wait.

The leaks so far show that the new upcoming GPUs from Nvidia will be a big leap in performance, possibly to the point that the 2080ti will be on par with a 3060. So the value of a 2080ti will plummet.

As for right now, u can use HDMI 2.0b and run 30hz 4k 12bit HDR 444 chroma (for desktop use (only 8 bit or 12 bit options available)). or 4k 60hz 8bit 444 chroma (gaming will likely kick down to 50hz for 10bit HDR). ..or 1080p /1440p 120hz.

For what its worth im going to be getting the 48" CX myself, and ill be upgrading my 1080ti (which i've only had for a year) to one of the new upcoming GPU's once they release. Seeing as how ill be aiming for 4k 120hz at that point it will likely be a flagship GPU.

I'll likely wait on buying the CX 48" until i can get the GPU, this 'should' allow me to buy it at a lower price, perhaps around Xmas. £1400 is a bit of a kick in the teeth for a 48" when most of us were expecting closer to £1000 or less.

The CX isn't an absolute upgrade over the C9, but LG did make some interesting changes.

As the owner of a CX 55" as a computer monitor, the thing is beautiful. Gaming, watching video, web surfing, etc. It does it all, and it looks glorious while doing it.

120hz OLED is amazing.

you guys

thank you so much for your help, i purchased the CX55 and it is arriving on tuesday.

are any of you in the UK by any chance?

i have to figure out this gpu issue now as i would like to run at 120fps and even if it’s only 1089p or that funny resolution that is a bit better...

it’s so hard figuring out what to do as the hdmi 2.1 cards probably won’t come until christmas will they?

depends..... up to £2,000 sterling but for the whole PC

@MadPistol I would like it to cost less than a grand as i’m getting so fidgety nervous that the new hdmi 2.1 gpu’s would launch within what feels like a heartbeat of my new pc being ready!!

thank you and all for the help as my CX55 arrived and is just beautiful although i am not exactly able to taste the 120hz gaming while playing Breath Of the Wild and xenoblade chronicles although i sure wand my pc to be able to run at 120hz so the fighting doesn’t make those nasty-ass smearing !!! 🥵

what are you using with it?

is it 1440p 120p you run it at?

I'm currently using a 2070 Super. It works well, but I do wish it had a bit more power for 4k. I will probably be getting the top-end GPU for next gen provided it has HDMI 2.1.

I need one more OLED to replace my bedroom TVs and it will be next black Friday when I plan to purchase.

I expect all the B9s and C9s to be sold out by then so it will be an CX.

Hopefully most of the bugs will be ironed out by then and I can get a 48" one for around $1300.

With the B9 I have had no image quality issues with VRR but I am connected to a computer and not a console.

Sound is an issue but it is Nvidia causing the problems since going into the Nvidia control panel and then clicking on the Windows sound settings fixes it.

It started with a driver update and hopefully it will end with one.

The second B9 I bought was for my Sons bedroom and the TV did not like his GTX 1080 ti at all so no VRR.  I ended up giving him one of my 2080 tis and that fixed the issue.

The issue was that the TV replaced a 32" 1440p 144hz monitor with a G-sync module. Without VRR the TV was a downgrade(for games). With VRR working it was an upgrade.
