Budget (including currency): $7-8,000 AUD

Country: Australia

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: This will be Gaming (VR) build only

Other details: don't need keyboard, mouse etc have existing Acer Predator XB270HU27" IPC 160mz

My mate is wanting to build a new PC and has quite a bit of money to spend... This machine will be for gaming only. The main games he plays are FPS (Modern Warfare, BF5, Apex, Overwatch etc).

The biggest thing we are struggling with this build is if we should go down the AMD (CPU) path or Intel (Gen10). The difficulty as i'm sure you are all aware is getting access to stock. For tax reasons he needs to buy this before June 30th.

We have considered RTX 2080ti (2x) but from what I have been reading the additional card is not going to provide a big performance boost (happy to be wrong). This is not a long term build (will be replaced in 2 years). So he is not worried about missing out on the next card, cpu etc.

So yeah any thoughts on AMD vs Intel on the CPU side of things? and then the best RTX 2080ti you can get basically. We are looking at the EVGA FTW3 at the moment.

Yes because at stock clock speeds, the CPU reaches 63C° and at 5.1GHz it reaches 83C° with the best 360mm AIO's out there to cool it. It also comes at huge power draw above 200W.

Yup. Even if it is the best CPU for gaming, I wouldn't buy it. I'd go with the 3900X even if it makes 20-40 FPS difference at 1080p gaming. The thing is, when you scale the resolution up, like 1440p, the difference between 10900K and the 3900X is very small. 10-20 FPS difference at max.

Has someone done test with a nh-d15? Cause if you reach 83C your reaching custom loop territory for lower temps.

Nope not yet. I searched but everyone likes to slap a 360mm AIO on it to test it and forget something like the Noctua NH-D15 and the DeepCool Assassin III exist.

If he wants value for money, then go Ryzen. If he doesn't care about that, and wants the highest fps possible then go with a 10900K and a 2080 ti. Just be aware that this is technically a new platform, so there will be bugs/bios issues etc until things get ironed out.

Yeah, I'm usually an advocate of air because of the extremely low failure rates. If they had something like an alphacool rad with noctuas at full blast I wonder how the temps/noise levels would be.

Same. While water cooling looks aesthetically pleasing, I prefer air cooling, like you said, mainly because, it's rare for an air cooler to fail. I'm interested how the 10900K temps would be if it were tested in the Core V71 Tempered Glass Edition with 200mm Noctua fans slapped, with the NH-DS15.
