Is two better than one?

A few months ago I built my first gaming rig, and decided to stuff it with an R7 3700x paired with two GTX 1080 FE in SLI. I got a stupid good deal on the pair of cards with the high bandwidth bridge thrown in. But as of late I've found myself at a bit of a crossroad. After doing some research I've found out that while SLI can be fun, it has some caveats. So the question I'm posing is this...considering that I got a really good deal on the cards that I have, should I stick with them? Or should I upgrade to a RTX 2080ti and sell my current cards? And for either choice, please explain why I should go that route. Thanks!

While SLI is pretty much useless for gaming, the 1080 is still a beast of a card, and I wouldn't recommend selling them to waste money on a overpriced 2080Ti with Nvidia's 3000 series just around the corner.

I would either;

1) Keep both cards (Because while SLI might not be useful, it's still sexy), and upgrade either when Nvidia 3000 comes out, or when you "need" to upgrade

2) Sell the 2nd card for beer money, and keep rocking the single 1080 until you need to upgrade/Nvidia 3000 comes out.

Im using two 1080Ti in SLI myself and looking at hardware usage while gaming, the second card is mostly just for the looks in my system. I got a pretty good deal on my cards too and have no interest in upgrading in the near future.

As Statik says: dont waste money on a 2080ti and keep both cards if you dont need the money or have problems playing your games.

If you want to upgrade wait for 3000 series.

To be honest, that's one thing that I was considering. Waiting on the 3000 series that is. I just wasn't sure how this pandemic would effect the launch.

I don't think it'll change things too much. I believe it's planned to launch around Q3/4 of this year, so it's quite far down the road that I feel most things will be relatively back to normal, but I can't say for certain.

Even if the launch got delayed to like Q1 2021, etc, I would still keep a 1080.

they will still launch this year. there's really no point in the 2080ti at this stage. the 3080 will be better and cheaper.

If I could justify wasting the money on another card, id get the 2080ti. A 1080 is far too weak and way paste the point of my use. I did enjoy using two of them for a point but ive never owned a cpu powerful enough to actually run them both properly.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've decided to just hold out for the 3000 series. This late in the game it just makes the most sense. So far I haven't really run into any issues running any games (with the exception of some micro stuttering in Witcher 3), so I should be just fine until then. I was actually shocked to see that Far Cry 5 was utilizing both cards when I started playing it recently, so no complaints there.
