Alright. I've got a self-built computer that my uncle set up and gave me for christmas, and i'm thinking about taking it apart a bit, putting new components in, maybe a new frame. i want a linux o.s but at the same time, i stream a lot of anime/movies, and i game, and stuff like that. any suggestions for parts i should use?

Well maybe you should start by listing your current components, and then explain what's wrong or what you want improved, since streaming isn't really that tough on a computer im guessing you want to game a bit more with better frames?

Anyhow, give us a current list of parts and what you want to improve :)

What are the specs of the PC that you have now? If you don't know, grab speccy and most of the details we are interested in are on the summary page.

Almost any PC can run linux from a low power media device up to a server, so it doesn't matter what OS you want to run, just what you want to do with it. What sort of games do you play etc?

So my actual current build will be my first foray into Linux and there are some things in terms of components that I guess should be addressed.

If you want to overclock video cards be prepared for some bios editing.

AMD drivers are trash but there is a good open source option.

In terms of core components there really shouldn't be any issues. Just be aware that Intel drivers seem to be better supported for Linux but AMD processors work fine.

The only things you really need to maybe need do be concerned about is if you plan on having a Wi-Fi card.

Most of my games are fps, although i play a clone of minetest as well. known specs are as follows, and i will update my specs when i can replace my power adaptor. (this is from my mother's laptop)

gigabytes motherboard, unknown model.

vid card: nvidia gforce 520

memory cards: unknown size, i have two.

as for the rest of the specs, i'll get them later as i said. since it was a christmas present from my uncle-as previously stated-he would know a lot more than i do, but trying to get ahold of him is impossible

The only problem i have with this post, is that about half of it's greek to me? .-. this will be the first rig that I myself build, and so yeah i'm kinda...antsy about it I guess would be the word?

When you say FPS games, do you mean games like COD and BF, because they won't run on a GT520 (your graphics card), so that would need to be improved probably. What's your budget? Also, to help us get a better idea of your entire system specs, could you run speccy (link in previous post). It's likely that all the other components are perfectly functional, but there could be some bad stuff in there. BTW, COD and BF (and most current (non-indie) games for that matter) won't work on linux.

for fps: no, i get em from the ubuntu software center cuz i know that most mainstream games won't work on linux, since linux is FAR from mainstream (i only found out about it maybe a year ago?)

budget: subject to change depending on how my job hunt goes, but currently it is persona non grata.

speccy: still saving up to replace the power supply so unless you want me to run it for mom's laptop....

OK well there isn't too much we can do to help you right now because budget makes a huge difference. Basically get the best nvidia geforce gtx card (660 or 750 +) you can afford when you get the money.
