Are used prices going up, or is Portland high?

atm0706

Was just browsing around the local Craigslist classifieds looking for an old, dirty, yellowing chassis for a sleeper build and I couldn't help but notice that nearly all the gaming PC's for sale have bonkers prices. Like $2500 USD for an 8086k with a 1080ti. Or $1200 for a 3930k with a 1070. This is just two examples of many. They aren't bad computers, but the prices seem ridiculous.

I wouldn't mind taking a break from gaming if I could make a healthy profit on my 2 month old build lol.

If they were actually being sold at those prices the listings would no longer be up ;)

But yes, the prices there are pretty ridiculous. There's a $3500 system with a Ryzen 3800X + RTX2080. From the parts listed on the ad the system would only cost around $2000 brand new. Swap the 3800X for a 3700X and the 2080 for a 2070 Super and you could build it for around $1750, half the price.

One sees it on eBay too.  Unrealistic sellers.  It’s a long running problem with computers in general.  People like to take the prices of the parts they used to build a machine and add them together without considering depreciation or the concept that the value goes down rather than up once assembled.  As a result they don’t sell.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
