Total Money Spent: $1100 new + $250 in upgrades

i5-6400

GTX 950

2x4gb DDR3-1600

1TB HDD + 500gb SSD

My current rig is around 5 years old. I recently upgraded my PSU and SSD, and replaced the thermal paste. The only thing is, I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to keep upgrading it because most of my components aren't compatible with newer intel cpus or ddr4 ram. Would it be better to buy a new rig down the line, or keep upgrading this one?

Thanks

What's your monitor resolution/refresh rate?

Can just drop in an RX 5700/XT whenever to max games out at 1080p.

although even a $100 RX 470-580 8GB will be like 50% faster or whatever

*actually it's almost twice as fast looks like

or a 590 for like ~$130 max, don't remember how it OCs.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

It's a plain old 1080p 60 hertz monitor. Also, is it any good going for a GTX 1070 / GTX 1660?

Not unless it's like a $180 1070

as the RX 5600 XT is finally closer to $250 on some models, and it's as fast as a 2060/Super, assuming the rebate actually works anyways.

You can just upgrade the RAM and GPU, but the Mobo and CPU, yeah you can't. I would suggest putting a mid range card like a GTX 1660S, or getting cards like the RX 5600 XT/RTX 2060S, RX 5700 XT/RTX 2070S if you're not concerned spending that much money on a GPU. You shouldn't upgrade up till 9th gen Intel, if you want your system to be Intel, wait for the new 10th gen series since they have more cores and threads, have hyperthreading and more clock speeds (but the power consumption will be huge on 10th gen).

Also how much RAM slots do you have? You should at least get 2x8 1600MHz sticks.

Though I would upgrade your current system to a AMD Ryzen system (you didn't said what PSU you have, so I can't recommend until I know if you should keep it or buy a new one).

CPU: Ryzen 3600 172.39$

Mobo: Gigabyte X570 AORUS ELITE (200$) or wait for the new MSI X570 Tomahawk, The Best X570 Board? (stock 200$)

GPU: GTX 1660S (EVGA SC Ultra Gaming 230$ or Gigabyte OC 240$) or RX 5600 XT Sapphire Pulse (300$)

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2x8) 3200MHz CL 16 or 74.98$ or G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB 72.49$

Case: CM H500 (100-120$) or the Fractal Design Meshify C (100-110$) or the Fractal Design Meshify S2 (160$)

Monitor: MSI Optix MAG241C 23.6" 1920x1080 144 Hz Monitor (330$)

If you can get the GTX 1070 for about 170-180$ used, but the GTX 1660S is more worth the investment.
