Budget (including currency): Difficult to put a number, want to aim for reasonable high end $3k-$4k ($AUD)

Country: Australia

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming in general, I have noticed it not hitting top settings with good fps in newer games like Warzone.

Other details

So I built my PC a while back now I think in 2013, it was fairly decent at the time. I have now been watching too many LTT videos and have got the bug to start improving things. Because my system is a bit old, its not as easy as a thought to upgrade and I am not sure what order to do it in to allow for big early performance improvements. I would like to catch the system up so it is fairly high end so dont want products too many generations behind current but I cant drop the $3k-$4k AUD in one go, so would potentially do the upgrade over a year or so.

Current System:

Intel Core i7 4790K OC to 4.5ghz

NVIDIA GForce 980

Corsair Vengeance Pro CMY16GX3M2A1866C9B 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3

Corsair CS750M Modular 80 Plus Gold Power Supply

ASUS Z97 Deluxe Motherboard

Corsair Hydro Series H110 280mm CPU Cooler

ASUS RAIDR Express 240GB PCI-E SSD

Phanteks Enthoo Luxe Black Case

Seagate Barracuda 1TB ST1000DM003

LG 27EA83R 27in AH-IPS LED Widescreen Monitor (60Hz 2k Monitor)

I am looking at what order people would recommend upgrading components so I can stage it over time as I get spare money for it. My few thoughts so far:

  • The Motherboard is a one of the big barriers as it wont take DDR4 memory and is an old 1150 chip set. So if I want to replace the motherboard Ill have to do the CPU and a new AIO at the same time so may take longer to save for the combo. Even if I do save for this, it potentially wont show early performance improvements in gaming if I am still stuck with the Geforce 980.
  • I could go for a higher end RTX graphics card upgrade first but I don't know how badly I will be bottled necked by my CPU and the rest of the system.
  • I would also like to expand my high speed SSD storage but the M.2 slots on the current motherboard dont support NVMe storage.
  • No need to upgrade the Case, Power supply or the disk hardrives. Unless you don't think the PSU or the Case will support the new parts.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, happy for suggested upgrade components as well or just suggestions on the order of upgrade. Also happy for you to tell me to be patient and wait to do the whole system at once haha.

Thanks All.

It would probably be best to wait and do it all at once.

If you wanted to do it in stages, I would recommend doing the cpu, mobo, ram, and cooler first. Then the gpu, then the new ssd.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

according to the manual and webiste it supports.

I kinda get you when buying stages. I am really systematic and i really enjoy buying parts staged.

it is good  that you buy staged now  since new cpus and gpus are coming in august.

Here are some good upgrades.:

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/2sdxFT/silicon-power-1-tb-m2-2280-solid-state-drive-sp001tbp34a80m28

As fast ssd as 970 evo plus but much cheaper.

I would just upgrade the ssd for now and wait 6months for new parts.

And well the case does look a bit outdated in my opinion. the meshify c has great airflow and goodly airflow with additional fans.

You only have 2k 60hz monitor?

that is pretty cheap 2k 144hz monitor

Thanks for the advice mate, Yeah waiting until August is probably a good call. Its tough to pick a time to just bite the bullet, there always seems to be something new coming out.

In regards to the M.2 slots, there is not NVMe mentioned in the manual becasue I don't think it was out at the time. How do you know its compatible, is that because it says it supports M key devices?

1 x M.2 Socket 3, , with M Key, type 2260/2280 storage devices support (both SATA & PCIE mode)*2
