Partial upgrade, how much should i keep?

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: anything from COD:MW, League of legends to 7 days hosting for 2 people whilst playing (my computer is the server). I occasionally play big open world rpg's e.g witcher 3 etc and love playing on max settings to absorb the eye candy available. I occassionally put my current build through the ringer by doing massive battles in warhammer total war 2 with huge armies.

recently was gifted a 1440p monitor that can run 144hz so if i can make use of that great but not essential.

I was initially thinking of swapping to AMD and getting a Ryzen5 3600X + compatable motherboard to match my partners recent build. The question i have is, is just upgrading the CPU enough and hold out till christmas time to upgrade GPU or am i looking at a 3 part upgrade now?

I would say just the CPU and mobo are worth upgrading at this point. The GTX 1080 is still a great card, I would wait for the 3000 series if I were you

The GTX1080 is a solid 1440p GPU.  Also keep the 850 EVO for booting.  RAM is fine, OC that to 3200 if you can.

 

3600 or 3600X, either is fine. 

 

I suggest a 1TB SSD as well for games.

Like stated above, you would have zero issues swapping to a 3600(x) + B40 or even x570 if you found a good deal. And you could use some spare money to grab some 3200-3600Mhz ram. The 1080 is still a solid GPU and you could easily make it work until the new 3000 series are released later this year. If not longer.

Don't bother upgrading yet. Wait a few more months and grab a 4600+B550 motherboard.
