How much/Do MOSFETs and VRM have an effect on overclocking, especially in overclocks on SB-E @ 5Ghz+?

A lot.

 

5 on sb-e.. You'll most likely run out of cpu cooling before your mb will need extra cooling.

I've seen a lot of 5 ghz on 3930k,3960x,3970x on water. Maybe IB-E will be a better overclocker unlike the change from SB -> IB.

On SB-E you tend to need VRM cooling to pass 5GHz. With the newer gigabyte boards with IR3550 MOSFETs, you might not need VRM cooling.

 

On socket 1155, you never need VRM cooling.

Most X79 boards have high quality VRMs so I would say that most of the overclock potential depends on the CPU and it's temperature.

Of course most X79 boards have good VRMs but when you're pushing 5 Ghz+ even a RIVE would get some heat problems I'd assume, gives me more to water cool when I go purchase my parts though.

At those kind of speeds, I would buy a small fan and point it at the VRM heatsinks. Does your motherboard have a built in VRM temperature sensor? 

CRM components are designed usually rated to run at very high temperatures, MOSFETs are usually rated at around 100C. But temperatures that high might reduce the lifespan of the components and are not good for stability.
