Hi all,

I registered just to post this struggle of mine here. I have an Asus B85M-G motherboard with an i5-4590 and 16GB of RAM. I decided to upgrade my GTX 750 (understandably needless to say) and I want to go for an RTX 2070. The thing is, I'm concererned about the CPU GPU combination as I've read that the CPU would hold back the GPU a lot. (I do not want to go into all the hassle with changing the whole motherboard+cpu, I could just build a new PC as well if that was the case.)

I also considered an RTX 2060, but the thing is that I want to upgrade my monitor as well to a 21:9 1440p 100hz one, for which it wouldn't be the best option as far as I'm concerned.

What are your thoughts? Would the i5 4590 and the RTX 2070/2060 interfere significantly? Which one is the better option for the display mentioned before?

(I don't play too many high end games, the ones I usually play are Assetto Corsa, Fifa, iRacing, ETS2, and I would love to play the new Microsoft Flight Simulator & GTA when it releases. (Although it would be nice to catch up on the latest Assassin's Creed and Far Cry games too))

With an overclocked i5-4670K and a 2070 I had some bad bottlenecking in CPU intensive titles like BF5 and Division 2. The ones you mentioned don't sound like they're that CPU heavy, so they should work fine.

A CPU upgrade down the line though will definitely unlock the full potential of the 2070.

Will be a bad pairing. You will need to get yourself an i7 to limit the bottleneck as much as possible, or better yet, upgrade your whole platform.

Yes the CPU will bottleneck the GPU, but upgrading to an i7 would cost you a lot, since Intel chips are still expensive, and you'll have to change the Mobo too. You CAN buy the RTX 2070 if you want, but only if you plan on to upgrade in the near future. New mobo, CPU, RAM.

The i5 you have is slower than a Zen 2 Ryzen 3 or 10th gen i3 so yes, it will bottleneck quite a bit. The 2070 will be usable but not to its max performance but more 60-70% depending on the game.

Consider an upgrade to Zen 3 in September and also consider a 2060 Super or RX 5700 as it's the same performance as a 2070 for less
