Thermal compound for laptop cpu and gpu with no heat spreader

If i want to apply new thermal compound to a laptop's cpu and gpu that has no heatspreader, do i have to use a special compound? I've heard some thermal compounds contains something that can be bad for the cpu if you apply it directly to the core (again, not the heat spreader), that's conductive or scratch it or similar.

You should look for something that is non conductive and without metal ions. Arctic Cooling MX-4 should work fine.
