I have an acquaintance who's new to PC I'd imagine. He's got a pretty decent PC with Intel CPU (can't remember the model).

Two days ago, he complained to me that he's not getting good FPS in his games (Fortnite and Minecraft). After fussing about a bit (because I was doing it remotely), I found that his CPU cooler wasn't working and the CPU was running at 100C and thermal throttling like crazy.

I have no idea how long it's been running like that. So my question would probably be, how does this effect the life of the CPU?

Can I expect to see any short or long term issues that may manifest?

Was this a broken watercooler or a small aircooler, with not passive airflow or something?

Anyways, the CPU should have throttled to avoid damage, but depending on how long it ran in this state; it could have impact the lifespan of the CPU a tiny bit (or affected its overclocking potential perhaps).

But I would not worry too much on that part.

It's an air cooler of questionable quality. When I asked him to see inside the case, he told me that 3 of the 5 fans (including the CPU cooler) was not working so I'm guessing airflow was also disrupted.

With a larger aircooler + some airflow, there should have still been plenty of airflow for it to not be at 100C.

But I suppose with a non-functioning fan on the heatsink + less airflow in the case, it could have gotten warmer.
