What do you want to run in these vms?

Do you need transcoding?

So you want this to be your desktop aswell?

Looking at that parts list, Id get differnt drives, those are used or old stock

Get a ssd

Id probably go ryzen 3600/3700x if it was me.

What os do you want to use?

Hi all, I'm new the LTT forum but I've heard great things!

I have a question that I need some help with. I am building my first home server that I want to be able to do a couple different things with.

1. Light virtualization

2. Home media (e.g. plex or emby)

3. General computing (I dabble in programming and web dev and i want somewhere to run my code)

My budget is $900.00

I've put together what I think to be a pretty good setup for my use case but like I said this is my first real server build. I would love to hear what you think and any suggestions!

Here is the PC Part Picker link:

Thanks!

To answer your questions:

I plan to use the vm's for running system specific software and tools. Like kali linux and and its suite of tools.

I'm not actually to sure if i need transcoding.. the bit of research i just did told me yes but that wasn't something i was even aware i needed!

And no this isn't going to be my desktop. i just wanted it to have the capability to run my code, which really isn't that hardware heavy. Just thought i should mention it.

I plan on using Ubuntu to run the server.

Also, thank you for the feedback! I will definitely look at getting different drives, and an ssd. I know you said you would go ryzen, i'm just curious is that because of a significant performance upgrade, or just preference.

So you don't need to use it with a gui.

And kvm for vms?

Look at proxmox as well, much better interface for running vms.

How much space do you need? Id get ssds for all the vms, vms are really slow on hdds.

Id go ryzen as cheaper for the same performance, or you can get faster, and you get things like ecc support.

Thats correct no gui necessary.

I need to do some more research as to what hypervisor im going to use but ive heard good things about proxmox so thanks!

To start im thinking 3-4 TB as i have lots of media i want to store and be able to view.

Also, i dont plan on the main use of this server being for virtualization, i just want to be able to occasionally.

Im definitely going to check out ryzen. Thanks so much!

A Ryzen option. Swapped out a few things for some higher quality stuff, PSU for example, if it's going to be running 24/7 you definitely want something good there.

The GPU I just put there for something to give you output since the 3700X doesn't have built in graphics.
