Hi everyone i have been facing this problem for month now and even after formatting my pc 2 time nothing seems to work
the problem is that the small shortcut icon is taking too long to show up and it is really annoying me, i'm not talking about desktop icon i'm talking about the shortcut icon you can see the gif below

kk.gif

also worth noting that i didn't had this problem in the past so i don't think it has anything to do with my spec
i appreciate any help and sorry for my broken english lmao

I tried that but still having the same problem
also i'm talking about the shortcut icon not the desktop icon so maybe that's why it didn't work ?

And you formatted your PC twice for THAT?

Do you using hdd or SSD? I mean program location. How much faster is that without antivirus installed?

Desktop is not refreshing 60 times per second. Try to save something to the desktop (but using explorer, not moving file to desktop by drag&drop) and see how long it takes for that file to appear on desktop.

Clearing icon cache may even slow down process. IMO it's not worth to complex investigation.

Slow drive, slow icons.

Every icon must be read from file. Even if is cached. Of course if it's cached, it will be displayed without delay, but then system check if icon changes (that takes time) and then additional small icon is shown. These additional symbols are not part of cached icon.

1. Icons for all programs are display from cache.

2. First program check if icon change.

3. If it's shortcut, additional small symbol is shown.

4. Repeat from 2 for next program.

Defrag may help. A little. Maybe.

It can have everything to do with it given how Windows and other programs evolve. Everything's more and more tailored to SSDs and not caring as much for performance on HDDs as time passes.

Or you're just looking at a time where Windows defender is running a scan, updates either for Windows or your programs are being downloaded/applied in the background etc which has mostly unnoticeable impact on an SSD, but huge on an HDD.

You didn't face this problem in the past, but as you see - you have that problem now. More and more functions was added to os, I bet you have some av installed that is updated too. And your hdd may be slower than when you first time using it. But hey - I may be wrong, maybe try install Windows again and again. As far as I know it is random operating system and it works different each time. :)

IMO you should consider buying even cheap SSD.

am gonna try formatting again and ignore windows update maybe it has something to do with the update,
as for ssd sadly it is not cheap in my country it's like 3x to 4x time the price of a normal hdd

You don't need a big SSD, jsut enough to put Windows and your most used programs on, the rest can be on the HDD. You should be able to get a 128GB SSD for $20 or so. Just make sure not to get a DRAMless one.

SSD is the biggest upgrade you can do for responsiveness...
