Hard lockups

Benergy

Hey guys,

I've been having this issue for a few years but still haven't been able to get to the bottom of it.

My PC works as normal all of the time - and is 100% stable while being stress tested with nice and low temps.

However when I try to do certain things, it completely locks up:

-Scanning for new hardware in Device Manager

-Installing new drivers (installing e.g. a mouse is fine, but a GPU or TV tuner card made it lockup)

-About 50% of Windows Updates (locks up and won't even let me restore/reset Windows, have to restore from disk image backup)

I always end up having to manually install the GPU drivers from the .inf file and I don't have the AMD software installed at all.

-I have tried three seperate GPUs that work perfectly in different machines (going through the whole uninstall procedure with DDU) and they all have the same issue.

-I've removed all of the non-essential drivers and peripherals and the issue still occurs.

-I have also updated the BIOS to the latest version.

-The issue occurs with no overclocks applied.

I've kinda come to the conclusion it must be a bad motherboard - does anyone have any other ideas?

Something to do with PCI lanes or motherboard not getting enough juice?

CPU: 4790k

Motherboard: ASUS Z97 Sabertooth MK1

GPU: RX480

RAM: 4x4GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 1866MHz

PSU: Corsair AX860

Thanks

Sounds like defective power supply, board or boot drive

I have swapped to a different boot drive, but yes might be PSU or mobo.

My VCORE seems suspiciously low doesn't it?

No, what do you expect for v-core? Try resetting CMOS though - if you have an overclock, it could be that
