Okay so I'm pretty sure this is an age old question that's been asked and answered time & time again. The issue there is conflicting information and personal opinions over validated data.

Here's the question though. If I upgraded a computer to 16gb of RAM would its configuration matter? By that I mean 4 - 4gb sticks occupying all four slots compared to 2 - 8gb sticks.

Would it matter since the end result is 16gb? If so, what's the hit to performance? Is it something that changes from board to board or CPU to CPU?

Thanks for your time forum and I sincerely apologise if it's an over asked question. I just figured this is the most reliable place to ask and get a legitimate tried and true response. Again, I appreciate your time in reading this and hopefully responding.

Performance wise, no difference. But more DIMMS enhance the risk of failures.

Appreciate it! Seriously, thanks for the quick responses and for not giving me a hard time on what's likely a very newby question. Solid replies all around. Going 2x8 does leave room for upgrades later and more parts definitely can lead to more potential failure. So definitely something to consider even if the performance hit is miniscule.

I'm assuming this is true across-the-board even with your 8 lane str4 boards compared to your standard ATX 4 lanes.

I'm just trying to build a rig that can handle gaming, streaming, editing -etc. So I may do a full board replacement and go Threadripper and those boards (as everyone here knows of course) have double the standard 4slot. At least typically. I did see a micro that only had 4 slots but that's tech for ya lol. There's always a standard... Until there's not haha.
